Summer 2006 Nathan & I (Lance) went backpacking through Cancun, Mexico's Mayan ruins & Cuba. Since Nathan is in those teenage yrs I thought it would be nice for him and I to have some solid father/son time.  This was also a practice run for summer 2009 after Nathan graduates high school and we backpack all of europe!

This is where Nathan & I stayed in Cancun. Called the Cancun Nest it is a nice little hostel next to a couple of parks, private swimming pool/club and close to the bus terminal and major streets. Quite, comfy & not too much money.

Here is Nathan at Chitchenitza, these where some cool Mayan ruins. Amazingly enough this was a cattle ranch at 1 time and then a highway ran through it before the Mexican gov figured they better research & preserve it.

This is one of the natural wells that causes the Mayans to choice the location for chitchenitza. Now you are thinking it was for access to water which is true of 1 of the wells, however this one was for tossing folks into. Hey some Gods are just tough to please.

This is the main feature of chitchenitza and before some old lady tourist fell down it you could climb to the top. I really don't see why they stopped letting folks climb since this was a site of human sacrifice after all.
One thing to recomemd was the really cool light show at night. Only problem for us was when we were walking back late at night to the town of Piste and Nathan noticed the date was 6-6-6. Not the best night to be where humans were sacrificed.

While I prefer to fly to Cuba on Aerocaribe this trip I figured Nathan should experience the pleasure of older Russian aircraft and fine cuban service. The planes are cramped inside but the flight crew is all smiles.

One of the finer pleasures of Cubana Airlines is the floor show. It starts with this gentle mist (condensate from the ac system) and....ok just kidding about the show unless you count watching the faces  of folks who have no idea that this is a normal thing.

In Cuba everyday folks in Habana get around in these huge buses called "camelos" or camels for obvious reasons. Tourist are not suppose to ride these for many reasons from the fact that pickpockets have an easy time with the press of people to that tourist really can afford to pay for taxi's.

Coco taxi's were the favorite ride around Havana for Nathan & I when possible. They won't go everywhere and don't run 24/7 but when you can jump on 1 do so.

In Havana I always like to stay in Casa Particulares which are something between and part of a private house and a bed & breakfast. At least this way I know cubans get the money not a major hotel chain. We got half of this house with private kitchen, bath, ac and entrance for $35/night.

The architecture in Havana is a mix of colonial, russian and 50's style. Sometimes it is hard to see under the decay but where folks have some money they bring back the beauty.

Here is Nathan in the La Casa del Habano in the Hotel Nacional. He was nice enough to help me dig through all those boxes looking for just the right smokes.

After looking at all those cigars and touring cigar factories Nathan & I found the best ice cream in Havana and Nathan says the best ice cream in the world.

This is the inside of the main building. For folks like us it was different in that you might share a table with anyone in order to get everyone in. Also you will notice the bowls since cones are not an option here.
